History of Annapurna Circuit

The Annapurna Circuit is a popular trekking route located in the Annapurna mountain range of Nepal. It opened for trekking in early 1977 after clearing the guerillas who had operated inside this area. Since its opening this route has then become one of the most renowned trekking destinations in the world.

Initially, it was a trail used primarily by local inhabitants and traders traveling between villages in the region. At this time, if you traveled this route, it would take you 23 days to complete the trek because of the infrastructure lacking. However, with the development of trekking tourism in Nepal, the Annapurna Circuit can be completed more faster and has gained popularity among international trekkers.

What Makes Annapurna Circuit Trek so special?

Not only the mountains, in the Annapurna circuit trek, you will get to see the world from the religious and cultural perspective of the Tibetan and Hindu people living in the areas. As you pass through the dozens of kilometers on this route, you will find diverse people on the journey living in places like Manang, Ghorepani, Dharapani, and Chame.

Not only from the cultural and traditional perspective you will also find this trek special by spotting different kinds of Flora and Fauna. Here, you may get the opportunity to see the rare snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, musk deer, etc. So, undeniably, these things are the unique features of the Annapurna circuit that make this place one of the best places to trek in Nepal.

Can a beginner do Annapurna Circuit?

The Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal is challenging but achievable, even for beginners with a good level of fitness and determination. However, it’s essential to understand the demands of the trek and adequately prepare for it.

Here are a few considerations for beginners:

  1. Physical Fitness: While the trek doesn’t require technical climbing skills, it involves walking long distances at high altitudes. Beginners should be reasonably fit and able to handle several consecutive days of hiking.
  2. Pacing and Rest: Beginners should take the trek at a manageable pace, allowing plenty of time for rest and acclimatization. It’s not a race, and pushing too hard can lead to exhaustion or altitude-related issues.
  3. Proper Gear: For every trek, having the proper gear is crucial. This includes having a high-quality backpack, suitable layers of clothes, and durable hiking boots.
  4. Training: Beginners should exercise to increase their endurance and stamina before starting the Annapurna Circuit.

All things considered, even though the Annapurna Circuit can be difficult for beginners, it is doable with the correct planning, attitude, and assistance. It’s important to approach the trek with respect for the terrain and altitude, as many individuals accomplish it as their first major trekking experience.

What level of fitness is required to do the Annapurna circuit trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is considered one of the classic treks in Nepal. Particularly, this trek is suitable for trekkers who have plenty of experience with hiking and trekking and have a moderate level of fitness. While the Annapurna circuit trek doesn’t require expert mountaineering skills or extreme physical fitness, it does involve walking for several hours. Here on this trip, each day trekkers will have to go through the steep and uneven terrain which is located at high altitudes.

To pass through such kinds of terrains, we highly recommend that trekkers engage in regular cardiovascular exercise such as hiking, walking, or jogging to build endurance. Additionally, strength training exercises focusing on the legs, core, and upper body can help improve overall fitness and prepare the body for the demands of trekking.

Hence, to complete the Annapurna circuit trek, you don’t have to be an athlete, nor do you have to have the endurance of a mountaineer. You just have to be in good physical condition with a regular exercise routine.

Annapurna circuit trek difficulty

As you know the Annapurna Circuit trek is one of the longest treks in Nepal, the difficulty of the Annapurna Circuit trek can vary depending on various factors, including individual fitness levels, weather conditions,  and the chosen route. However, to speak simply, this trek is generally considered to be a strenuous trek in comparison to the other treks. Here are some key points regarding the difficulty of the Annapurna Circuit trek-

  • Altitude: One of the main challenges of the trek is the altitude. While walking through the high altitude area your body will get tired more quickly. Here in this trek, trekkers will ascend to high elevations, with the highest point being Thorong La Pass at an altitude of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet).  So before reaching this point, the difficulty level increases as you go up the altitude. Know that, for every thousand meters ascent the travel becomes 10% harder. So altitude sickness is a potential risk, making it crucial to acclimatize properly by ascending gradually and allowing time for rest and adjustment.
  • Duration: The Annapurna Circuit trek typically takes around 14 trekking days to complete, covering a distance of approximately 160 to 230 kilometers (100 to 145 miles), depending on the specific route and side trips taken. The long-duration version of this trek will require physical stamina and endurance.
  • Terrain: There are many types of environments to walk on during the trek, such as rocky roads, dirt trails, stone steps, and occasionally severe ascents and descents. Trekkers may have to cross rivers, walk across suspension bridges, and pass through challenging areas of tough terrain.
  • Weather:  Particularly from June to September during the monsoon season and from December to February during the winter, weather throughout the Annapurna Circuit can be unpredictable. Especially at higher altitudes, trekkers may experience chilly temperatures, wind, rain, and snow. Having appropriate clothing and gear is essential for dealing with shifting weather conditions.
  • Teahouse Facilities:  Although there are teahouses and lodges along the trail, the quality of the lodging and facilities varies. While some teahouses might just have the most basic facilities, others might have more comfort. Trekkers should be ready for shared accommodation, basic food, and basic bathrooms.

All things considered, the Annapurna Circuit trek has its difficulties. However, those who are prepared, have a reasonable degree of fitness, and are prepared to take on the demands of high-altitude trekking in the Himalayas can complete this adventure.

Best time for Annapurna circuit trek

It is important to choose the appropriate season for the Annapurna Circuit trek. October through November or April through May are the ideal seasons to trek the Annapurna Circuit. These are the seasons when it won’t be too chilly up high, the skies are clear, and everything is usually rather dry.

Between those two seasons, comes the winter season which delivers a clear and breathtaking landscape, although heavy snowfall can cause Thorong La Pass to close for several days at a time.

As we’ve previously stated, spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are typically the greatest times to do the Annapurna Circuit trek. The best weather for trekking occurs throughout these months because of their lively sky and stability. When you are walking upward to the higher altitudes, you will find that the weather is not so cold or not too hot in these seasons. For more details, we have done a breakdown of what to expect during each season:

Springtime brings calm, pleasant weather along with warm and long days. Here you can also see the brilliant colors of the rhododendron woodlands Clear skies offer spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, making it an ideal time for photography enthusiasts. However, as May month approaches near, you may feel the environment a little bit more hazy.

Next comes the autumn season, which is an ideal choice for trekkers as it also offers sunny skies and calm weather caused by the post-monsoon season. The air is crisp and the temperatures are pleasant, making it easy to see the amazing mountains. The attractiveness of the trekking journey in autumn is further enhanced by the beautiful surroundings and refreshed landscapes following the monsoon rains. Also consider that the famous area like Manang, the teahouses are filled with the presence of tourists.

Hence, trekking experiences are great in both spring and autumn, so choosing one of them generally depends on your schedule and personal preferences. Springtime may be your best bet if you enjoy somewhat warmer weather and blooming flowers. However, autumn can be a better option if you value bright skies, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful scenery.

Note that although trekking the Annapurna Circuit in the monsoon season (June to August) is possible, it is not usually advised because of the likelihood of avalanches and landslides, leeches, and excessive rainfall. Similarly, winter trekking can be done from December to February, however, it can get quite cold at higher altitudes and snow can prevent access to some of the higher-altitude areas.

How to prepare for the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

For the Annapurna Circuit Trek to be both safe and pleasant, careful planning and preparation are necessary. Here’s a brief step-by-step guide to help you get ready:

  1. Physical Conditioning: Maintain a regular fitness schedule two to three months before your expedition. To increase stamina and endurance, focus on cardiovascular exercises like cycling, running, walking, and trekking. Include strength training activities to develop the core and leg muscles needed for trekking.
  2. Altitude Acclimatization:  Acclimatizing properly is essential to lower the risk of altitude sickness because the Annapurna Circuit requires walking to high altitudes. Before the trip, spend some time in a high-altitude place like Namche Bazaar or Manang to let your body get used to lower oxygen levels.
  3. Packing Essentials:  Make a thorough packing list that includes all of the necessary clothing, equipment, and supplies for the trek. This includes trekking poles, a sleeping bag, a headlamp, water bottles, water purification tablets, a first aid kit, snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, insulated jacket, moisture-wicking clothing layers, trekking boots, trekking poles, and waterproof outer layers.
  4. Permits and Documentation:  Obtain the required licenses and paperwork to go trekking in the Annapurna Conservation Area. This usually comprises the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. Before beginning the trek, make sure you have the necessary permits and an acceptable identity (a passport).
  5. Training Hikes:  Go on training hikes or practice treks in your local area before the Annapurna Circuit Trek to test your gear and increase your trekking endurance. To reflect the conditions and terrain you’ll encounter on the trek, gradually increase the length and intensity of the hikes you do in your locality.
  6. Weather Awareness: Plan your trek by the seasons and weather patterns of the Annapurna region. Trekking is most enjoyable in the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November), when visibility is good and the weather is consistent. Especially at higher elevations, be ready for a variety of weather conditions, such as wind, rain, snow, and temperature changes.
  7. Emergency Preparedness:  Know about the routes for evacuation, emergency protocols, and available means of contact while trekking. Keep a portable charger, a fully charged cell phone, and emergency contact information on you in case of need. Take into consideration getting high-altitude trekking insured by your travel insurance.
  8. Mental Preparation:  The Annapurna Circuit trek may be hard on the body and the mind for you. Get yourself mentally ready for lengthy walking days, different terrain, and possible suffering from altitude. For a secure and pleasurable trekking experience, maintain your good attitude, moderate yourself, and pay attention to your body.

By following these steps and getting yourself physically, mentally, and logistically ready there is no reason to doubt that you will face the difficulties during the trek.

Accommodation facilities

In recent years, accommodation options for the Annapurna Circuit Trek have improved significantly. Just like any other trek in Nepal with Mission Himalaya, you will be taken to a comfortable 3-star hotel in the city of Kathmandu. You can share a room with other people here or just be by yourself. For that, you will have to inform us so that we can make arrangements for you to have a separate room if you are a lone trekker.

When it comes to accommodation options on the trekking paths of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, nearly all of them are lodges and tea houses dedicated to tourists. As the flow of the trekkers, has increased more in recent times, the services and standards of the hotels are rising rapidly in the Annapurna region. We would like to inform you that every teahouse on the Annapurna Circuit Trek has facilities to provide necessities for the trekkers. The bed, pillow, mattress, and blanket are all included in the basic accommodation package here. In most of the teahouses, you can expect solar or electric heater showers with connected restrooms.

While walking through the routes of the Annapurna circuit trek, we expect you to share the rooms with other trekkers on the Annapurna circuit trek. However, we will try to accommodate your request for a separate room if it is possible. If not, please make the necessary adjustments. Also, be aware that you will be able to access fewer amenities at higher altitudes and that certain services, like WiFi and hot showers, may incur additional costs.

Food and drinks

The majority of the foods in the Himalayan treks are similar. However, if we had to draw comparisons, we can differentiate the food by the regions. Most Nepal trekking requires some permits and an entrance card. So whenever you think of trekking in Nepal don’t forget anything regarding the permits and all. If you head trekking without the permits, you can’t even enter your preferred location.

Similar to the other trekking, this trekking also demands two permits. One is the TIMS(Trekking Information and Management System) card and another one is the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit.

You can get these permits easily from Kathmandu and Pokhara. Not only for the Annapurna Circuit, but a TIMS card is also required for many treks in Nepal. However, an ACAP permit is required only for the Annapurna Region Trek.

You can get these trekking permits easily from Kathmandu and Pokhara. Further, if you are joining the guided trek in Nepal, then your guide will look after all these arrangements. The only thing you have to do is to provide him with your details which also includes your passport photocopy and passport photos.

If you are planning to trek by yourself, then you have to see all these arrangements by yourself. To get the TIMS card and ACAP permit you have to visit the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu. This office is located in Pradarshani Marg Street and is opened everyday From 10 AM to 4 PM.

If you are in Pokhara, then you can purchase these permits from Nepal Tourism Board Service Center. The office is close to the Lakeside of Phewa. Besides these all, you can also purchase the ACAP permit in Besisahar which is also the starting point of this journey.

However, you have to come here with the TIMS card, you cannot get this here. Another thing you have to keep in mind during the entire journey is that each permit, either TIMS or ACAP, all is applicable for only one entry.

Another thing to take care of is that, whenever you are in the high altitude region, drink hot water. The lodges and teahouses there allow you to refill your water with the hot water but charge some extra.

Winter:

Due to the excessive cold and snowfall, the trail towards the higher altitudes remains snow-covered. Further, the snowfall may bring severe snow streams with the high winds. Therefore, a winter trek is not recommended in the Annapurna region.

During this season even the locals in the higher altitudes descend to the lower altitudes. However, to the daring trekkers, a trek to the this region in winter is a great adventure. Covered with piles of snow, the Himalayas at this time looks more fabulous.

Moreover, being the off-season trek, you can enjoy the peaceful trek without the crowd. If you are planning the Annapurna Circuit trek in winter, then make sure to prepare yourself for the worst weather and various risks on the way. Also, don’t forget to bring the proper trekking equipment and gear.

Summer:

The months from June to August come in the summer season. With few trekkers around, there is something very special about this season. And that is the green and colorful environment after the rainfall. You can witness diverse flora and fauna too.

Further, you needn’t have to worry about accommodation. Being the off-season trek, you can find empty rooms in teahouses and hotels. The cost of accommodation might even get cheaper at this time.

Furthermore, the presence of various leeches may cause some irritation.

Though some part of this trek like Manang and Jomsom comes under the rain shadow area, there are still many areas where rainfall comes with several risks. Hence, to avoid all such risks it is better not to do this trekking in the summer season.

Ans:

To be frank, this trekking journey is not an easy trek. With several challenging factors, this journey is quite demanding.

Among many, the high altitude of this trek is the major factor for making this trek more difficult. During this trek, you will be starting your trek from the lower elevation around 800m up to the highest elevation of Thorong la Pass. Thorong la Pass is located over the 5000meters.

Therefore reaching up to this higher elevation from that lower region, you will be facing the high elevation gain which may result in altitude sickness. There are no ways to avoid altitude sickness. Even if you are a professional trekker or marathon winner, there is no surprise if you get caught by altitude sickness.

However, proper acclimatization rest and adequate drink of the fluids like water, juice, and soups help you a lot for acute mountain sickness. Also, avoid smoking and drinking throughout the trek. If you notice any signs of acute mountain sickness like nausea, dizziness, vomiting, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, diarrhea, then immediately inform your guide.

They will guide you and tell you what you should do. After taking some rest if you find yourself comfortable, then they suggest you further trekking. Otherwise, you have to descend down to the lower altitude. Till you get fine, you have to stay there.

Even after doing this if you feel uncomfortable, return back to the city. Due to its high altitude, the weather here remains quite unpredictable. So, trekking towards Thorong La Pass, the trail is steep and there also there are high risks of avalanches as well.

Besides the high altitude, the trek difficulty also depends on your trekking season, number of trekking days, budget, and experience. Experienced trekkers may find this trek relatively easy.

However, for first-time trekkers, it can be very demanding. But don’t worry, with some physical exercise training, you can conquer this trek like any other trekkers. Furthermore, hire a guide or porter for a comfortable trekking experience.

Ans:

As per your trekking season, luxury demand, and the number of trekking days the cost of your trek depends. Joining the trek during the off-season, the trek costs get low. If you are not aware of the off-trekking season in the Annapurna region, then they are winter and summer.

For the luxury seekers, the overall cost of the trek becomes quite high than for the normal trekkers. If you are trekking for long days, your trek cost automatically gets higher as per your food, transport, and accommodation cost.

Further, the cost varies from company to company. But, there is not much price difference among these companies. For your analysis, a short breakdown of the prices of permits, accommodation, food, transport, and a porter or guide hire is listed below.

You need some extra amount to buy that permit. Moreover, you have to take a local guide along with you, to enter that region.

Transportation cost for Annapurna Round Trek:

Normally you will start your trek to the Annapurna Circuit after a long drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, Jagat, or Chame. Depending upon which type of transportation service you pick up and up to where the cost varies. If you want to reach these locations by local bus, then it costs quite lower than private transport like a car or taxi. Similar is the case while returning to Pokhara.

From Pokhara, if you opt to choose the Pokhara Kathmandu flight, then be ready to pay more than for any roadway transport. If you are someone, who wants to complete this trek clockwise, then you have the costly option to get to Pokhara from Kathmandu by Flight.

Further from Pokhara, you have another option to join the Pokhara to Jomsom by Flight which costs around USD110 for one way. You can also take roadway transport to reach Pokhara and Jomsom. Also, it costs far less than the flight.A clockwise trek does not allow your body the proper acclimatization of rest.

Therefore, there is a huge risk of getting Acute Mountain Sickness in this clockwise trekking. Just keep in mind that this clockwise Annapurna Circuit is not recommended, so try the anticlockwise trek. Food and Accommodation Cost You will be paying an average of around USD40 for basic accommodation and food. Don’t expect drinks and beverages within this price range.

And also remember, along with the gain of altitude, the price of food, accommodation and drinks increase. If you want a luxurious journey, then expect to pay higher than the above-mentioned amount.

Cost of hiring a guide and porter:

It’s all up to you whether to hire a guide and porter or not? However, when joining the trek of this difficulty, it is recommended to hire them. With the porter and guide by your side, you needn’t have to take the stress of finding a way and carrying the luggage. The per-day cost of hiring the local guide and porter comes around USD 30 and USD 20 respectively.

Ans:

For joining this Annapurna Round Trek, you needn’t have to be a professional trekker or a marathon runner. But, if you take some training before trekking, it will provide you the ability to adjust to high altitudes. For the exciting trek journey, it is better to work on leg exercise.

Some time spent in the gym might also help you a lot in the preparation for this trek. Further, aerobic exercises, including jogging, swimming, and sprinting helps you gain endurance and improves the oxygen circulation in your body.

Besides, as the trail to the Annapurna Circuit is full of lodges and teahouses you don’t have to carry sleeping bags and all. So, you can enjoy this trek without any stress. However, for a memorable and wonderful trek, bring a licensed guide or porter on your trek.

Fantastic trekking

We trekking combined with ABC and ACT absolutely fantastic. The crossing to the high altitude Throng-la (5416m) with amazing landscape and heart-touching views is my lifetime best. The guide was so funny told us a lot of jokes to make our trip never bore. The porter carrying luggage like they do not feel any tired. Keep it up to Mission Himalaya Trekking And Expeditions Team.

One of our friends Chema feels sick in trekking Nawol but our guide helps us to give him medicine as well. Because of his effort and arrangement we are out of six- 6 complete Throng pass. The guide was so flexible according to our condition and desire. He managed tea houses, food, and transportation so easily.

We give the best recommendation to Mission Himalaya Treks and Expeditions PVT Ltd. We plan to come back again for Everest Base camp Trekking with our friends and family.

Great MHT arrangement we are appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Winter trekking in Annapurna circuit

Doing Act trekking in the wintertime is Very difficult than we expected. From the help of a well-experienced guide Birendra and three porters, we made it and it’s really once in our lifetime experience. Highly recommend this trekking company. The Throngla-pass was incredible.

Top trekking Destination

I just completed the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Mission Himalaya and had a great time with their team. Our guide Birendra who was honest, considerate and professional in working. I would highly recommend him a lot. This trek itself was difficult for 2 days in Pisang to Manang upper way and throng Phedi to Muktinath but worth it. I saw many many different body types of people, ages, and nationalities on the trial and if you planning I would advise to just go for it with this company. Take training prior but this is a top trekking destination around the world. Do not wait to grab the chance and go to Nepal.
