Trip Information

Numerous hikers dream achievements of trekking in Nepal-reaching the highest mountain in the world-Mount Everest base camp. Trekking to Everest Base Camp has become the most popular route for mountain expeditions in Nepal. But outside the Everest Base Camp, there are many hidden roads and secrets waiting for us to explore, one of which is Gokyo Lake. If you are willing to add an extra three days, it is very easy to add this spectacular lake tour to the itinerary of the Everest Base Camp. It will be very beneficial to make a difficult hike through Cholo pass.

Trekking experience

During the peak tourist season, about 1000 tourists go trekking to the Everest Base Camp every day. Although the road is less busy at some times of the year, it is still the most popular hike. As people learn about this amazing hike, Gokyo RI with Gokyo Lake has become more and more popular, which is also a good way to avoid the crowds on the main road to traditional Everest base camp.
Another great advantage of Gokyo Everest hiking is that the route to Everest Base Camp is just up and down on the same route. If you add an extension on the Gokyo Lake and pass through the Chola Pass, the whole journey takes a loop and does not need to go back too much. In other words, you will not walk through the same place twice times, you can enjoy more Beautiful mountain views.

Best time:

Generally speaking, Nepal trekking is not recommended during the period from June to August, because Nepal is in the rainy season/Monsoon season. To reach Lukla, you may encounter several days of flight delays and waiting time at the airport and it's too rush. The Cho La Pass is 5,364 meters above sea level. Due to snow, the Cho La Pass is often closed from late November to mid-February. So the best time to trek Chola pass in Spring (March April and May) and another season Autumn(September October and November)

How is the scenery of the Chola pass trek?

When trekking through the mountains of Nepal, you cannot miss the scenery there. In other words, every hike has its own scenery and experience. Hiking to the Everest Base Camp, you will pass by local villages, visit Tyangboche Monastery, walk through the forest, and admire 4 of the highest peaks in the world, including; Cho Oyu(8201m), Lhotse(8516m), Makalu, and Mount Everest(8848m). On Lake Gokyo, you can see a peaceful view of a relatively untouched place, passing through forgotten valleys, traditional villages, impressive glaciers, and of course, peaceful mountain lakes. Gokyo Lake is composed of six spectacular glacial lakes with an altitude between 4700 meters and 5000 meters, making it one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. From these sparkling turquoise lakes, you can see amazing panoramic views of more than 8,000-meter-high peaks, including Mount Everest from Gokyo RI.

Gokyo lake and Everest base camp trek difficulty

Kala Patthar (Kala Patthar) reaches an altitude of 5545 meters, but Everest base camp plus Gokyo may be more difficult. This is not only a long hike, but the Cho La Pass is a gleaming ice road. It is a technical glacier pass and can only be reached with crampons with the help of an experienced guide. The Gokyo hike on Lake Gokyo cannot even be carried out within a certain period of time, because the pass is actually closed due to snow during the winter months. Fortunately, if you have visited the Everest Base Camp, you should be used to hiking at high altitudes. When you pass through the pass, you will feel more powerful. Both types of hiking are difficult due to the terrain or steep slopes. However, if you are ready for the challenge, the hike to Lake Gokyo is well worth it.

Gokyo Ri and Kala Patthar viewing platforms Comparison

Whether you are on a standard Everest Base Camp hike or a hike in Everest Base Camp plus Gokyo Lake, the highest peak you will reach is Kala Patthar (5545 meters), which means "black rock" in English. From here, you will see the best view of Mount Everest, the sacred mountain, and the magnificent Nuptse Peak. Gokyo-ri (5357 meters) The view from the top of this mountain is even better than the view from Kalapatthar. From Gokyo Ri you can see 4 of the 14 highest peaks in the world-Mount Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8501m), Makalu (8475m), and Cho Oyu (8201m) -And one of the highest glaciers in the Himalayas, right under your feet.

How can I hike Chola pass clockwise or anticlockwise?

If you are studying this trek, you will find that some routes will take you to Gokyo first, and some will take you to Everest Base Camp. Mission Himalaya Treks itinerary is anticlockwise. First, we will take you to the base camp, then cross the Cho La Pass, then to Gokyo, and then back to Namche Market. This is the preferred reason for several reasons. First of all, going to the Everest base camp is more conducive to adapting to the environment. Moreover, it is much easier to cross the Cho La Pass from north to south. It really doesn’t matter which direction you go, but we find that customers usually prefer the route we take because in case they cannot pass Chola they can explore Everest base camp which was a many traveler's buckle list.

Can I hike alone to Gokyo lake and Everest base camp?

The advantage of trekking through the Himalayas is that they can be customized. This is your dream trip, most people will stop by Gokyo Lake on their way to EBC. However, you can also visit the Gokyo Lake alone or even add it to another hike. But we suggest you take the guided trip because you may be losing the way in Chola pass during much snowing. or if you feel the sick middle of the trail the guide can take care of you. do not see only the budget when you going to higher elevation trekking. we suggest you hike with a guide in Nepal for any higher elevation trekking for your safety trek.

Useful info

According to the categorized trekking Chola pass and Everest Base Camp trekking is considered one of the difficult popular trekking in the world. Although this trek is difficult some of the success to complete whole trekking some of them will suffer to complete by high altitude and pain. It is the most popular trekking in the world because of this hundreds of trekkers trekking every day during the high season of trekking.

The trekkers who can afford a 6-7 hours walk every day up and downhill can complete this trek.  We suggest the trekkers exercise and jogging every day at least 30 days prior to start this trek Chola pass and EBC. This trek is easy for those trekkers who have experienced in trekking high altitude environment. Big technical issues no necessary for this trek. If you have a blood disease, lung, and heart problem please consult with your doctor and inform us before booking this trek. MHTAE suggests you bring knee support. Is training makes this trek much easier than the people who come without training? Altitude is the focus reason for this trek is difficult because above 5000 m will make it tourists hard to breathe as well.

Trekking is an adventure sport. Based on the difficulty of the routes, it requires high motivation and previous experiences. Some of the treks in Nepal are suitable only for highly experienced trekkers where some routes are suitable for novice trekkers as well. An average fit person with regular training can do most of the treks. Please consult with us if you are concerned about your fitness level.

Altitude Sickness

Most trekking routes in Nepal are in high altitudes above 3500 meters which are part of the high altitude. Trekking at a high altitude is a serious activity especially for those without having previous high altitude experiences. Drinking lots of water and ascending slowly by catching your breath regularly helps a lot to fight altitude sickness, however, there is no bulletproof plan to prevent altitude sickness at all.

You will be staying at 3-star category hotels in Kathmandu and teahouses during the trekking period. All accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis. However, the single supplement will be provided at your request and will be the additional cost. But during the trekking period, a single supplement will be given if there and available in the lodges. Some lower elevations can be fine but the upper elevation might be difficult to give a single room. The accommodation in the city might be two single beds or 1 king-size big bed. If a guest has a special performance for the room selection please feel free to inform MHTAE.

We will try to provide you with a special appropriate room during your stay in Nepal. Numerous lodges provided blankets in the rooms but we suggest you bring your own sleeping bag. In the whole trekking, you will be accommodating in lodges no need for camping and a tent. Please do not expect high-standard rooms during your trekking period. If you are a single traveler in the higher elevation you need to share the room with another single trekker like you (same-sex). In case we are not able to provide you single supplement we will refund your single supplement charge. We hope you understand the situation of trekking places. Please do not expect high-standard luxury lodges, you are in a remote place. They offer basic rooms for accommodation.

Meals on the Trek:

During your trekking period, we will provide all the meals but only breakfast will be given in Kathmandu. Depends your international flight time we will provide you a farewell or welcome dinner in a typical Nepali local restaurant with a cultural dance show. During your trek breakfast and dinner will be taken in the lodges where you sleep overnight but lunch takes in the middle of the trekking period. Indian, Italian, Nepalese, and continental food is the choices in the trekking menu provided by the tea houses. Like noodles, soups, handmade bread, rice items, curries, spaghetti, pizza, egg items, potatoes are available in the mountains.

These meals are prepared after your order. Most of the places meats also available but we recommend you not to take them as they are not fresh. Sometimes unhealthy food affects your body and trekking. Do not expect western meals as you take in the city and in your home. We give you full freedom to select your preferred meals from the menu provided by the lodges. The food and raw materials are locally prepared and taste different than the city.

Our trek includes meals on the trek prepared by the lodges means we do not need to carry food for all the major trekking routes of Nepal.  Most lodge-based treks offer foods prepared in the lodges locally however it's recommended to carry some energy bars and other quick bites as some camps might be longer than the usual waking hours.
