Everest Base Camp Trek

Overview

Trip Information

Trekking to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) is moderate difficult and most trekkers with normal physical fitness can finish it. In planning the itinerary, we (the Mission Himalaya Treks and Expeditions Pvt. Ltd) have considered the speed of ascending and number of rest day to ensure that you can acclimatize to the high altitudes properly and to enjoy your trekking most.

The climax of this trekking is to see the 360-degree view including 3 of the worlds’ highest mountains Mt Everest (8848m), Mt. Lhotse (8516m) and Mt. Makalu (8462m) from Kala Patthar (5545m) which is the highest point can be reached by walking. The Sagarmatha National Park is not only the property of Nepal, but also of the world because of its rich world heritages. Khumbu is the home of the world’s famous Sherpa people.

Moreover, the numerous variety of fauna and flora, the world’s biggest glacier, Sherpa culture, the magnificent mountains, hundreds of monasteries, stupas and chortens, and the Tibetan arts all make your journey highly heart touching.

For a longer trekking, we can start from Jiri where is just 8-hour driving from Kathmandu. This route enables you to acclimatize the high altitudes slowly but you need longer holiday. If you want greater challenge, we can offer you EBC with the Gokyo Lake and Chola Pass. The easiest and shortest way is by an exciting return flight between Kathmandu and Lukla.

Day 02: Fly to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft) & trek to Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft), 3-4 hrs walk
In early morning we take a 40-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The scenery is gorgeous in the flight and in the Lukla airstrip that is situated in the mountain. Depending on arrival time at Lukla, we may enjoy lunch before walking to Phakding. The trail from Lukla to Phakding is easy. We can spend our evening stroll around the Phakding village while we stay overnight there.

Day 03: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,283ft), 5-6 hrs walk
After breakfast, we start by walking along the Dudh Koshi River. We have to cross this river twice on the day. We then arrive at a small village called Monjo which is the gateway to the Sagarmatha National Park. After entering the national park, we walk down to Bhote Koshi River. We pass through Jorsalle village en route to Namche Bazaar which is the capital of Khumbu region, a prosperous trade hub in the lap of the Himalayas. We stay overnight at a hotel in Namche Bazaar.

Day 04: Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar
Acclimatization day is very important. It allows your body to get used to the high altitudes and prepare for further ascending. On the day, you can walk up to the Everest View Point Hotel to enjoy the view it offers or just walk around Namche Bazaar to see how the mountain people live. If you come across the local traditional Saturday Market, it would be fun to visit the marketplace. There is a Sherpa Museum which is a good place visit if you are interested in Sherpa culture and history of mountaineering

Day 05: Namche to Tyangboche (3,867m/12684ft), 5-6 hrs walk
After breakfast we start our pleasant trekking. Throughout the walk you can see the great mighty peaks of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kwangde, and the trail mainly ascends through the forests. In Tyangboche, today’s destination, the first view that will catch your eyes is the big monastery, then is the amazing Mt. Ama Dablam which can be seen even from your accommodation site.

Day 06: Tyangboche to Dingboche (4,358m/14,295 ft), 5-6 hrs walk
The trail goes downward to Deboche and then ascends through the rhododendron forest. We then cross a valley and the plains to Dingboche. It is a relatively easy day of walking.

Day 07: Acclimatization day at Dingboche
Acclimatization day again is to prepare your body to ascend further. You can have rest all day, or take a couple of hours hiking up to Chhukung (4,730m). Chhukung is a small hill station among mountains and glaciers.

Day 08: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,928m/16164 ft), 5-6 hrs walk
Today is challenging! The distance is only about 4.5 miles but with a lot of vertical gains. We walk through the Alpine Meadows and Yak Pastures to cross the Khumbu Glacier. The end of the glacier moraine is specifically steep and challenging. We then continue along the rugged route to Lobuche where we stay for the night. Lobuche is situated beneath the Lhotse Ridge.

Day 09: Trek to Gorak Shep (5,160m/16,929ft) & hike to Everest Base Camp (5,320m/17,450ft) 5-6 hrs walk
Today is the most challenging and fulfilling day of the trekking. We hike to the Everest Base Camp (EBC), our final destination, which is more than 5000m above sea level!
We set off to Gorak Shep which is a small village sitting atop a small frozen lake buried under the sand. We have lunch there and hike further along the Khumbu Glacier. On the way, you will catch the glimpse of an intimidating black rock that the world knows as Mt. EVEREST. The way leads us to the EBC. Have you ever heard/read that Mt. Everest cannot be seen from the EBC? You can find the answer yourself! We stay there to explore the base camp and the surroundings, and return to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 10: Early hike to Kala Patthar (5,550m/18,204ft) & trek back to Pheriche 6-7 hrs walk
We start very early in order to reach the Kala Patthar before dawn (your guide will arrange everything for you). It takes several hours from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar. You must not miss the most wonderful sunrise from Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks such as, the Nuptse, Ama Dablam & Pumori! We take our time enjoying what Kala Patthar can offer before going back to Gorak Shep and then further down to Pheriche.

Day 11: Pheriche to Kyanjuma (3,500m/11,480ft), 5-6 hrs walk
From now on, it is all descending. So we can walk faster and easier. The beauties of the Himalayan terrain will never leave us along the way. We spend the night in Kyanjuma.

Day 12: Kyanjuma to Khumjung to Monju (2,850m/9,348ft), 6-7 hrs walk
The highlight of the day is to know more about the lives of the mountain people. We visit the school established by Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to land Mt. Everest (accompanied by the Sherpa people Mr Tenzing Norgay) in 1953 AD. We also visit a hospital run by a charity. Then we walk down to Monju and stay overnight there.

Day 13: Monju to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft), 4-5 hrs walk
Today you can walk at your own pace as we go back to Lukla from where we have started our adventure. You are delighted that you have completed the trek and experience the thrills and beauty of it. At the same time, you feel a bit loss as you have to leave the beauty and the adventure behind. But, there is always next time and next adventure waiting for you. The evening is marked with celebration that includes a lot of singing and dancing. We stay at a hotel in Lukla.

Day 14: Fly back to Kathmandu
We take the earliest possible flight back to Kathmandu. Our guide will transfer you to your hotel where you can relax at your will. Later the evening, we will treat- exquisite Nepalese cuisine at one of the finest restaurants. It will also be a great opportunity to hear from you about your experiences and get constructive criticisms and suggestions that will help us make improve ourselves.

Day 15: Departure from Kathmandu
We drop you to the airport by a company representative 3 hours before the scheduled flight. Enjoy your flight to home. We hope to see you again soon.
